Gres Coat- Dare I modify and make it?

I love this pattern....and I really really love this mill offcut of boiled? wool, it's abeutiful colour and would be very warm as a coat...it was a gift from my boyfriend for my birthday back in March, but I'm only really getting back into sewing recently. I'd like to make the coat but will need to make a few adjustments....I'd love a shortish kind of coat so i was thinking below the tab in length...and also lengthening the sleeves...it just isn't practical for me to make 3/4 sleeves becasue even with a long sleeve top underneath it isn't warm and goes into the that.. category that I would put arm warmers and fingerless gloves in. anyway here's a photo of pattern and fabric...let me know what you think
